Juan Manuel Marquez vs Jose De Jesus
Garcia
Garcia is going to be Marquez's next KO victim. Since losing his second fight by
disqualification (or was it his pro debut?), he has put together 26 wins with 20 KO's.
Very impressive. Garcia is a nobody who, the last time I saw him, got KO'd in the second
round.
Marquez by KO in 3 or less!!
Tony Lopez vs Hector Quiroz
Tony the tiger Lopez has always been an intriguing boxer to me. In October of 1989, Tony
was stopped in the 10th round by John John Molina. Molina gave him the rematch, and Lopez
fought and TOOK the title away from Molina!
That was ten years ago though . . .
In Hectors last fight, he was stopped in the 12th round by Antonio Diaz. Don't get me
wrong, Diaz is the IBA Junior Welterweight Champ who is a determined finisher and Quiroz
gave him a run for his money!
Hector is younger and bigger than Tony Lopez. He's also in his prime. With a 25-3-1
and 21 KOs, He has proven to me he has the ability to be a champion, but will he?
Hector Quiroz in a slug/clinch fest by unanimous
decision
Felix Trinidad vs Pernell Whitaker
Felix is awesome, but with a questionable chin. Pernell WAS a champion, with much heart.
No - Sweat Pea is a crack head shooting for his last chance for greatness. Why? He's been
suspended from boxing for testing positive for cocaine in his decision win against Andre
Pestriaev Oct. 17, 1997, and hasn't fought in 16 months. Why SHOULD he get the
chance for a title? What's up with that??
Sweat Pea Pernell can do some rounds. But is he in shape for it? I doubt it.
Trinidad's record is 33-0, with 29 knockouts. That's an %88 Win to KO ratio. Whitaker is
41-2-1, with 17 knockouts. A mere %39 win to KO ration.
Although Trinidad has only been past the 5th round once (into the 8th against Oba
Carr in 1994 in which he stopped him!) since out pointing Hector Camacho in 12 rounds on
Jan. 29, 1994, I believe it will not take him that long to dispatch a flabby, mouth wide
opened and eye's swelling closed Sweat Pea inside of 5.
Trinidad by convincing TKO inside 5
Vince Phillips vs. Terron Millett
When he lost by 3rd round KO in april of 96, I was doubting Phillips'
abilities. Until his fight with Tszyu. Every since Vince stopped Kosta Tszyu in May of
1997 to win the IBF Jr Welterweight Title, I've been impressed with his consistent
performance.
Even thought Terron is ranked #1 by the IBF (as a super lightweight), he
hasn't fought the same caliber opposition that Phillips has. With a 18-1-1 and 12
KOs record, you have to wonder his true effectiveness at this level of competition. He'll
fold!
Phillips by TKO inside 4
In Retrospect:
Tony Lopez vs Hector Quiroz
Quiroz wins by KO in 1st round. WIN
Very surprising fight! I expected Lopez to survive longer
then 1 round!! Hector's the man to watch. Notice on the inside, how he rolls his shoulders
tight, with his hand close to his body. Keeping his punches close and compact. He throws
his punches with alot of leverage and power with precision.
Juan Manuel Marquez vs Jose De Jesus Garcia WIN
As expected, Marquez stops Garcia quickly. I expected as much. Marquez is another fighter
I've followed for sometime. Now when Garcia fights again, I can say I saw some one stop
him in the 1st round =)
Felix Trinidad vs Pernell Whitaker
Trinidad wins by unanimous decision. WIN
Pernell looked SWEET tonight. He looked like the Pernell who fought Julio Cesar Chavez the
first time! Excellent effort, and this loss may of actually boosted his career. I expected
Tito to stop him quick, but he did put him on the canvass a couple times =) Tito's
performance was excellent, and in my opinion, De La Hoya better look over his shoulder.
Vince Phillips vs. Terron Millett
Millett wins by 5th round stoppage!! LOSS
Vince Phillips folded! In a lackluster performance, he gets overwhelmed by a nobody! He
looked strong going toe to toe in the 2nd round, but at the close of the 3rd, it was all
over. He never recovered fully from that knockdown at the end of the 3rd round. Vince gets
knocked down again in the 4th, and in the 5th Richard Steele waved off the bout to a
booing Garden crowd. Well, Millet is someone now =) But the question is . . .for how
long? I'll keep an eye on him.
